MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The father of the 2-year-old child who was fatally shot in North Minneapolis last week has been arrested and is currently being held in Hennepin County Jail.
Two-year-old Le’Vonte Jones died one week ago. He and his 15-month-old sister were shot around 11:30 last Friday morning at Lowry and Penn Avenues North.
Surveillance video shows the minivan the boy was riding in and an exchange of gunfire between the minivan and the car at a stoplight.
Jones died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.
The child’s 15-month-old sister was also hurt in the shooting but has since been released from the hospital.
On Friday, police arrested the child’s father, 25-year-old Melvonte Lee Peterson. Sheriff’s records indicate he was wanted on warrants for possession of a firearm and for drive-by shooting at an occupied vehicle or building.
He also had a bench warrant out for driving with a revoked license.
He has a court appearance scheduled for Monday afternoon.
